w/ Shaun Evaristo! Saw him at WOD LA 2012! It was a great experience to meet one of my biggest inspirations to dance! And especially at WOD where you meet many great dancers, the community just keeps getting bigger! And mL is of course part of this big family! When he gave me the shirt he was wearing, I was speechless and it was one of the best moments of my life. Watching videos of him felt like nothing when I finally got to meet him. The way he pursues dance is just amazing. He brings about a much deeper meaning behind it. At first I started off dancing because it looked cool and fun. But as I got more into dancing and started joining not only my all-male at school but also MarvelsDanceCompany, I began to truly have a passion for dance. And watching Shaun helped me realize that dance is more than just entertaining but another way of speaking to the community and showing the significance it has on our lives. Thank you Shaun for being such an inspiration to me and hopefully the same to others as well!
We’re a little late for the party but check out Kyle Hanagami’s latest work featuring Shaun Evaristo and Nick Demoura!
Enjoy!

First off I would like to open up by saying that I feel extremely blessed and humbled to be surrounded by so many wonderful dancers. The community I live in has anything BUT a strong dance community. My initial reaction to arriving at theTOUR was not my ecstasy of meeting great people like Lyle, Shaun, Jeka Jane, etc. But my pure, blissful joy of finally, finally being surrounded by a LARGE group of people who share my passion for dance completely wholeheartedly EMBODY It. These people not only dance because they love it, but because it is all they want and need to find blissful joy.
So I would first and foremost like to offer my thanks to all of my new friends from theTOUR, particular those of Kodachrome NC and Kodachrome VA.
Now then, off to my experience:
I arrived at the location, knowing only one person. A guy named Isaac from KNC. Needless to say it was pleasant knowing I would not be a fish completely out of water and at least know one person. From then on it was a simple transition from just chatting it up, to introductions, to amazingly fun cyphers.
The Kodachrome group quickly got together and stretched together. I was outside of the circle and as soon as a space opened up I quickly jumped up and ran for it. Moments later I look to my right and see a guy. I look back to my stretching and enjoying everyone’s company. DOUBLE-TAKE, and realize that I’m stretching next to non-other than Shaun Evaristo. The only thing I can really think to do is tell him “thank you” for coming to theTOUR.
The first piece we learned was a spectacularly FUN one by Mari Martin to Stevie Wonder’s “Do I do”:
For this, Mari had some wonderful messages. “Be happy and really enjoy dancing.” “Solos are meant to be LEARNING experiences!” To which everyone would ask for a solo and constantly say “I need to learn MORE!” hahahaha. This piece had high energy, and I admit I had quite a bit of difficulty doing the little spinny move she had us do but I still had fun!
Tony Czar then taught us two pieces, one the first day and another the next and they both had different flavors to them. One I forget the name but the other was a sexy groovy one to sequel by Bslade.
What I love about Tony’s teaching style is that he very much ENJOYS it and has a lot of fun joking with us (not saying that anyone else does not enjoy it). What I learned from Tony through his dancing and his words is to “dance with [my] soul” because ” no one can do you better than you.”
NEXT UP was Keone Madrid who taught a spectacular piece to The Way You Make Me Feel by MJ. What I love about this is that it definitely encompasses what Tony said about “doing you” however, at the same time it stresses a dancers ability to create and use a character when performing certain pieces! Such as this one that you had to put YOU into an MJ mindset.
Next up was none other than Mykell Wilson’s choreography to We Found Love by Rihanna! It had a very African dance feel to it and it was not something I expected to that song! However, it was very cool! The lesson I learned from him was to really chase your dream (as in he really talked about it). He gave a lot of awesome speeches but most of all what I got from him was “if you feel like it is what you’re meant to do then use what God gave you.”
Next up wasssss none other than LYLE BENIGA!!!
I mean I feel like this speaks for himself. He taught us two pieces over the two days, one to gimme some more by Busta Rhymes and Murder to Excellence by Jay-Z/Kanye.
Lyle is hecka impressive, he choreographed the first piece right before class started. However, the second piece is where his lesson came in. He wanted to teach us how to dance BIG! But controlled. And that’s a lot of what I got from it. However, dancing like a ninja and doing all of the moves to time was VERY difficult =]
And then, ANDYE-J!!!!
Andye-J taught a VERY groovy piece and started off the second day RIGHt with a piece to 702 by Steelo. I actually had the easiest time learning this piece because I can relate to grooving a LOT. And I just had a TON of fun doing this dance. I mean, that’s really all I’ve got to say. I also very much appreciated Andye’s “sexy dance” she would do when people were talking too much hahaha. What I most appreciate about Andye is the fact that she helped me so, so, so much while I was trying to learn the choreo. so Thank you Andye-J
Mari Martin and Keone Madrid taught us a duet piece! TO NONE OTHER THAN THEIR “PLEASE DON’T STOP THE MUSIC” PIECE!!! With this they stressed the importance of dancing with OTHERS and really bringing unity in the dance community. And Mari hilariously commented on how you can “dance with others without grinding.”
Finally LAST BUT NOT LEAST.
The tear bringer. Shaun Evaristo taught a very emotional and “simple” (i use this world loosely) piece to Who You Are by Jessie J. This piece..was is absolutely spectacular. Never in my life had I ever felt so emotionally connected to choreography like that. Shaun wanted us to just be natural with the piece, not go hard, or hit hard, but just interpret the music as we would and come from our own place to bring it to the floor. And when he performed his solo….yeah we were all brought to tears.
CONCLUSIONS:
I just want to say that, this was the most spectacular experience of my life. This was only the second time I have ever taken actual dance lessons because of where I live. And I could not have asked for a better experience in my life. The most important thing all of the choreographers/teachers taught was this: Dance is a community, it’s not all about yourself. They constantly stressed the importance of using dance to bring people together, not break them apart. And I would like to say that while they had some skepticism about that existing, with the existence of groups like KODACHROME:
I have no doubt in my mind that community still exists and there’s pure love of dance and each other in it.
Thank you so much Movement Lifestyle for theExperience
Movement Lifestyle artist: Andye J, Ian Eastwood, Jillian Meyers, Brian Puspos, Devin Jamieson, Shaun Evaristo
Experience: Movement Lifestyle Tour - Chicago
Description: I went to the tour with my boyfriend and my three friends. We traveled from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On the first day of the tour, we registered, took pictures, bought merchandises, then stretched. We were all pretty excited! Jeka Jane was thereeeee!! but she didn’t teach :( But I still got to meet her and learn along with her anyways. We did a warm up then Brian Puspos taught ‘Rise & Shine’. The choreo was beast. He was a fun and really helpful teacher. Andye J taught us this funk type of hip hop… but I wasn’t sure what the song title was.. sorry :( She was such a down to earth person. LUNCH. Ian Eastwood taught us ‘Faded’ after. Ahh, I had a hard time learning this dance. It was definitely advanced level or something. He just killed this dance. It was veerryyy good. Jillian Meyers taught us ‘Valerie’. I love Jillian, she’s such an animated person. I really like this choreo. It was like lyrical, contemporary. Just watching her dance… you could see the emotions in her eyes. She was beautiful. After Jillian, Devin Jamieson taught us ‘housing’. The title wasn’t housing but the choreo was practically it. OMG. This choreo required so much energy. I always wanted to learn housing so I was pretty excited but damn, it’s really tricky. Seeing Devin perform this.. I have no words for it. He definitely has a whole `nother energy. First day of class ended so after, was ‘The Social’. We got to take pictures with the choreographers, ask them questions, and had a mini-type ‘dance’ AKA ‘social’. Wish it could’ve been longer :( To sum up first day: INTENSE.
THE NEXT DAY was a better day. It felt like we all improved over night. Jillian started the day with the warm up and then continued teaching us ‘Valerie’. I felt this choreo was a very colorful and fun dance :) Brian finished teaching us ‘Rise & Shine’. I really liked this one because it brought out the confidence, which he intended. Ian finished teaching us ‘Faded’. I’m not even going to comment on myself…. Ian does it best. LUNCH. Andye taught us a new piece, ‘1 + 1’. It was my FAVORITE ^^ This was such an emotional dance in a good way. It felt amazing dancing to this song. It was a stress reliever. Beautiful, just beautiful. After teaching, we all had an emotional moment :’) Finally, Shaun taught us ‘Drop it on the 1’. I am sooo honored to have learned this dance by him. It’s kinda tricky but fun. This one, he intended to make us work on details and execution. Then.. the class ended :( After was the ‘Teacher’s Showcase’ which each teacher performed a piece. Awards & scholarships came after… and I’m not sure what happened after. But, unfortunately… the tour ended.
NOTE: In ONE NIGHT, the ML fam shared an inside joke ‘fast’ and/or ‘so much’ . Someone asked Jeka Jane about her style of choreography and all she said was, ‘fast’. Then Brian kept using it and there it went :)
I am proud to have been part of the first group to experience the ML TOUR :) I met ‘so much’ amazing talented dancers. I have learned ‘so much’ thanks to ML ♥ I will always support ML! Coming back for more next year!! Sorry if it’s not as detailed.. I didn’t wanna write too much >.<
To begin, I wanted to say thank you first to all the choreographers and staff for such a great convention. Being my first one, I can’t believe how much I learned this past weekend because it felt like quick dream, but an everlasting one. Anyways, enough with that moving on to the dances:
Brian Puspos: Rise and Shine
“Be a better person than you were yesterday”
This choreo was amazing, because of the movements displayed in this piece. The hand gestures of extending both your arms and feet going out and coming in together like waking up, was my favorite. Movement changed fast to medium to slow at some points but definitely expressed an emotion to the swift movements.
Overall I enjoyed all of it!
Jillian Meyers: “Valerie”
Let yourself free
I felt very loose and relaxed in this choreo and it felt great! Jillian has such great expressions through all her loosed movements. I love that idea that when you’re so in to a song and you let the song move you. I feel that in Jillian when she performed this piece! LOVED IT!
Devin Jamieson
The foot work in his piece was definitely something new to me because when it comes to momentum I can relate it to physics… Besides that though I enjoyed his piece because it felt like i was jumping on clouds with quick feet.
Ian Eastwood: “Faded”
Dancer’s choreo has their own texture to their art pieces.
This dance was too much fast. Even though it was fast it was powerful and it hit hard. Ian’s choreo from slow-medium-fast grew a lot because starting out slow was a big help for me. As we went faster, it was mind blowing because all the movement came one right after another. Loved it also since the power was so greatly achieved.
Andye J: “1+1”
Miss Andye’s one plus one was so moving. The lights adding such a great vibe to the class and feeling every movement of the song flowed through my body. It was uplifting and it felt so great. The point where it got personal and emotional opened my eyes to how moving this great piece of work was as for many other students in the class. Again thank you miss Andye do come back and visit chitown :)!
Shaun Evaristo: “Move it on the 1”
Wow! Ending with Shaun, was just breathtaking. The CEO of movement lifestyle was actually there presenting his piece to us the students or should I say MOVERS. Watching the commercial, then realizing we were doing the same choreo blew me away! Quick and such flawless movements displayed in this piece.
Overall I am in love with MOVEMENT LIFESTYLE! :) Thank you for coming to Chicago!
